SAFE: Launch of the latest SAP-E Stroke Services Tracker data

On European Stroke Awareness Day 2026 (12 May) SAFE and the European Stroke Organisation released the latest Stroke Action Plan for Europe (SAP-E) Stroke Service Tracker (SST) data.

The SST is the annual monitoring tool of the SAP-E, giving every country the data, the targets and the roadmap to improve stroke care by 2030.

Drawing on data from 49 European countries, the 2024 data findings show real gains in emergency treatment and early rehabilitation but also persistent gaps and inequalities that demand urgent action:

  • Stroke unit access stands at 68% across Europe, unchanged from 2023
  • Lack of progress in secondary prevention, post stroke discharge and follow-up planning, and long-term life after stroke support
  • where a person lives continues to be the single greatest determinant of the care they receive.
